Factors in Choosing the Ideal Fighting Cock

In sabong or cock fighting, a lot of players and even game fowl breeders follow a certain set of standards in choosing the ideal fighting cock for them.  This is also more pronounced on the side of bettors who favor a certain color of a fighting rooster to use as basis in their bets.

Not much emphasis is given on the breed or genetic lineage of a battle cock as it is not possible to ask and find out about the background of the rooster when it is about to fight.  Bettors mostly identify the owner or handler of the fighting cock and bet based on the record or history of that person in cock fights.

But when nothing is known about the owners or handler of the fighting cock, bettors will follow their instincts and one of the basis in choosing and placing a bet is the color of the coat.  The color is called and based on the vernacular and they could be Mayahin, Bulik, Talisain, Orange, Blue, White, Dalusapi, Abuhin, Alimbuyugin, and many others.

In the Philippines, the predominant color is red and they are called “Mayahin.”  In choosing, the fighting cock to place their bets on, some Filipino cock fighting aficionados adhere to  the color.  Reds or Mayahin are generally favored, next is the Talisain, and so on.  There are also those who are fans of White roosters.  Others prefer to choose based on the color of the feet.  There are actually a lot of nuances and “sayings” about which fighting cock is effective against the particular color of an opponent.

A good number of bettors do not like White as it is easily covered in blood once wounded which gives the impression that its opponent becomes stronger and more eager to kill its opponent.  This is probably the reason why the popularity of Zamboanga White fighting cock is short-lived in the country.  But there are still many breeders that continue to breed this line.

A Hennie or “Binabae” also has a strong following among bettors.  This is especially true in hack fights in small coliseums all over the country.  With an ordinary rooster, a Hennie has an advantage because the gameness of its opponent is lessened when the opponent is considered a female.

How about you? What color of fighting cock do you consider as your lucky charm?
